The xx – Crystalized

May 25, 2010

The Late Nite Pirate Pick for Monday 24 May was…

actually a pretty fitting Pirate Pick for the British Invasion Long Weekend AND a continuation of the CountDown to Sasquatch!  The xx are a really buzzy, really hot up and coming trio from London.  They’re one of these bands that are getting all over TV.  If you dig on this type of music, it’s a real “soundtrack to your life” style of music.  Pretty good stuff!

Camera Obscura – French Navy

May 25, 2010

The late Nite Pirate Pick for Friday May the 21st was…

a really fun and pleasant song by this band Camera Obscura (not to be confused with the thing Camera Obscura, the invention that led to modern photgraphy as we KNOW IT!!).  They are from Glasgow Scottland, so let’s all give them a nice big North American welcome when they play the Big Foot stage at Sasquatch this year!

Public Enemy – Fight the Power

May 25, 2010

The Late Nite Pirate Pick for Thursday, May the 20th was…

continuing the countdown to Sasquatch!  The hip hop group that is proud to have Flava FLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAV!!! as a member!  The hip hop group who is actually coming to Victoria this friday the 28th!  Check the concerts page on theZone.fm for more about that.

This song is awesome;

LCD Soundsystem – Time To Get Away

May 21, 2010

The Late Night Pirate Pick for Wednesday May the 19th was…

from LCD Soundsystem as we continue to march our way towards the Sasquatch Music Festival!   They are playing the MAIN STAGE,  right around when the sun is gonna start to head down, which should make for a very interesting and gigantic dance party!  Aww, lookin forward to that!

Get ready to clap…

Ween – Ocean Man

May 19, 2010

The Late Nite Pirate Pick for Tuesday May the 18th was…

day two of Countdown to Sasquatch!

Another band people (but not me) are losing their minds about is Ween.  I never got big into Ween, but after sampling tonight’s Pirate Pick, i’m left thinking to myself “why not?!”  Sounds like music i WOULD enjoy…

Anyways, maybe i’ll see them live and they’ll change my life and all will be right with the world.  Maybe.

Pavement – Rattled By The Rush

May 18, 2010

The Pirate Pick for Monday May the 17th was…

The Beginning of COUNTDOWN TO SASQUATCH!!

omigawd, omigawd, omigawd, omigawd Sasquatch!!  It’s only 11 sleeps away!!  And considering i’m gonna be OUT like a flickering outdoor lantern at a spooky haunted cabin recovering from SCARY WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY, it’s practically tomorrow for me!  So stoked!

As with last year, the Late Nite Pirate Pick will be devoted in the weeks leading up to the Sasquatch Festival to lesser-knowns, up-and-comers, and weirdo-festival-oddities which round out the line-up for big music festivals like Sasquatch, but also… that make them fun and interesting adventures!

We’ll start out the Countdown with the first act who was announced this year, Pavement!  They don’t get played on the radio anymore, but i think if you’re a LITTLE bit older than i am (25) you remember Pavement getting played a whole bunch, and being a big deal.  Lots of people around my age (25) that i talk to are like “who the eff are Pavement and why the eff are they headlining a festival like Sasquatch?!”

Their wikipedia says it quite nicely;

“Although they experienced only moderate commercial success, they achieved a significant cult following and were one of the most popular and influential lo-fi rock bands of the 1990s”

For the record, of the 90′s sounds, i enjoy “lo-fi” more than “grunge”.  Grunge was great for it’s time, but where lo-fi begat “indie rock”, grunge spawned the un-holy evil that is POST GRUNGE.  The worst.

But i prattle on.

Atlantic Cable – Space Station Mir

May 16, 2010

The Pirate Pick for Thursday May the 13th was…

sent in by Kergin along with a whole huge heap of others.  Will i get to all of them?  Yeah maybe, eventually.

The first one on his list is by a band called “Atlantic Cable” (named, no doubt, for the Atlantic Cable)

Bleeeearrrrg there’s no YouTube for the song, and also their MySpace (as linked above) doesn’t have it either.  A shame, cuz it’s a great song.

GUESS WHAT THOUGH!!  If you are reading this Pirate Pick archive, you might be interested to know that coming soon to theZone.fm ITSELF… will be a Pirate Pick blog/archive.  It’s true.  I probably can’t say anymore than that, even though i’m excited and i want to.

Will this mean that i will totally neglect this Pirate Pick Blog?!?!

Probably.

haha naww, i dunno, maybe not.

Excelsior!!!

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Gardener

May 13, 2010

The Pirate Pick for Wednesday May the 13th was…

mentioned really only in passing by dear dear dear friend of mine Betty Barracuda, as she is going to this show tonight in Vancouver.  The artist goes by “The Tallest Man on Earth” which of course, he is not.  It’s a very nice friendly folky style of music.  Makes perfect sense that this guy has toured with the likes of Bon Iver.  Betty’s favourite song is the Gardener, so that’s the one i played!  Thanks Betty!

Lydia – We Clean Up So Well

May 12, 2010

The Late Nite Pirate Pick for Tuesday May the 11th was…

prompted by my friend Jenna who made mention on her Facebook that her favourite band who no one else in the world has EVER heard of was breaking up.  While it may be true that i certainly have never heard of this Arizona band, they certainly seem to have a comprehensive enough Wikipedia.  This of course leads me to believe that they do indeed have a decently big following of SOME kind, or else they are raging narcissists and update their own Wiki like crazy.

Anyways, sure enough, JUST TODAY, this “little unknown” band announced that they were BREAKING UP!… after one more record… and a tour… Alright.  If you’re interested, they made the announcement, along with posting the song i played on the Zone tonight on their MySpace.
